Mike Kochevar moved to approve minutes

Motion passed minutes were accepted as written

  1. Land Trust Budget Review – Mike Kochevar
  1. Mike Kochevar reviewed the budget goals.  He feels that our goals will remain the same as what they were.
  2. AP and CE classes are starting to carry themselves may only need to put funding towards 6 classes rather than 7 classes.
    1. How should extra money be spent?  In honors classes, math classes etc? Money for teachers to attend AP Conferences
  3. Secondary Math 2 classes have 20 students in them.  Classes are standards based.  Students like it.  They know where they stand.
  4. Would like to hold summer in service for new hires and new teachers
  5. Richard Hoonakker has been hired as a half time coach to work with new teachers.  Looking to hire another teacher half time to work with Richard as a coach.
  • Before the next meeting would like to see:  graduation rate breakdown (by ethnicity) AP pass rate, etc.
  • Put transfer credit link put on website
  1. Parent/Teacher Conference Reminder- Wednesday, February 22, 2017 – 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
  2. From 12 PM to 4 PM Teachers will be in their rooms.  Lunch between 4 and 5 (Upstairs teachers 4 to 4:30 Downstairs teachers from 4:30 to 5). From 5 PM to 8 PM teachers will be in the commons.
  3. Counseling Center Parent Survey during PTC — Suggestions on how to get parents to take it.
    1. Send home information telling parents that the data gathered will stay just at WJHS.  It will not be sent outside of the school.
    2. Have students in the middle of the commons with iPads for parents to use
  4. Scheduling update – Tom Gatten
  5. Registration cards are online so that parents can print off a copy to make changes and take to the school if they do approve of the classes chosen by their students.
  6. Juniors will go over their registration cards during PCCR’s to make sure graduation requirements are met.

  • Introductions

  • Minutes from the last meeting were approved
  • Rules of Order and Procedure were approved
  1. Mad Jag’s Report – Student Govt
  • MAD Jag (Making a Difference)- charity in December
    • Many events to raise money (ex:odd jobs- working at homes in community)
  • Record breaking year- 50,000
    • 24,000 Odd Jobs alone (average 80 students a day)
  • Charity Tree in the lunchroom
    • Place for students to write their experiences
  • Seniors are training juniors and sophomores on Odd Jobs to continue to make a success
  1. Arena Scheduling – Michelle Putnam
  • We are going to go back to the registration cards (coming in February)
    • Course requests will be circled and entered
    • Master schedule will be created based on requests
      • Problem-solving on master schedule is easier to see
    • After schedule is built then there will be an auto schedule
  • Arena scheduling will be open after in May for students to go in and make adjustments
    • Core classes will be locked in so students can’t drop them
    • Tech Center will still do Arena Scheduling /March 26-March 27
      • This is only for programs that do not require an application
      • Programs that require an application will be put in their schedule if they are accepted
    • Audition classes will be put into the schedule at the end of April
    • Sophomore House will be dropped but we will still have Jag Academy
  • Master Schedule will be out in mid April
  • Counselors will be available to help with schedules
  • Sophomore Orientation on Feb 8th 5 PM-7PM and West Jordan Middle is 6:30PM-8:30PM
  1. Update on Building improvement schedule – Tom Gatten
  • Replace all lighting with sensors and settings (LED)
  • Replacing all tiles on ceilings
  • Heating and air conditioning updated
  • Parking lot in the front and side will be redone
  • Turf football field
    • Waiting to see on improvements on concessions and bathrooms
  • Baseball field will be leveled
  • Basketball court will be sanded and repainted
  • Front entry will be completely redone
    • Main Office and Attendance Office will be moved up to the front of the school
    • Registrar will be added to the Counseling Center
  • Rugby and Lacrosse will be at the different schools depending on the markings
    • We requested to have Girl’s Lacrosse
  • It was suggested that a letter could be sent to our school board
  1. Monies allocated to WJHS for School improvement
  • Secondary Math 2 -extra teacher (1 full time and 1 half time) and 4 math tutors
  • 20 students in each Secondary Math 2 class
  • Hired ESL aid
  • Math software will be purchased
  • Hired 2 graduation coaches to work with sophomores and juniors
  • Instructional coaches to work with other teachers on standards based grading
  • Money set aside for conferences (up to 20 teachers)
  • Public relations representative
    • Working with South Valley Journal
    • Facebook
  • Appreciation about ACT Prep class was expressed
  • Request was made to have AIP be an intervention period instead of work completion time
    • Response to Intervention conference this summer for teachers
  • 432,000 for the next 3 years to make these improvements
  • It was suggested that we ask students what type of teaching helps students to learn best
  1. Graduation Rate – Mike Kochevar
  • Our graduation rate went from 77% to 84%
  • Base Camp and Summer Program helped increase our graduation rate
  1. Dogs in rooms – Mike Kochevar
  • Police dogs – come to sniff lockers
  • Park City – 6 rooms are picked randomly and dogs go in and sniff the back packs
    • They found 8 bags in one room
  • Allergies?
    • Students would leave the room and the dogs would go in
  • We will advertise to students and parents about the dogs
  • It was requested that we advertise as a positive program
    • And also to talk with the other principals
